Not so long ago if you wanted to obtain a visa to live and work in the UK and you were highly skilled, a Hsmp visa would have been granted to you. The highly skilled migrant programme saw many skilled immigrants using their skills to good effect in the country. This scheme has now been replaced by the Tier 1 visa system. Now instead of applying for Hsmp visas any immigrants that posses skills that could be beneficial to the country will need to go down the Tier 1 route. It`s not just highly skilled migrants that are given Tier 1 visas because post-graduates can apply for them too. Also investors and entrepreneurs wishing to inject money into the UK`s finances can also apply for this type of visa. Anyone that is highly skilled and wants to reside and work in the UK will be eligible to apply for the new Tiered visas. It works on a points system and those with sought after skills will score highly on their merits. They won`t have to be sponsored by a company either and as long as they can prove they have earned a good salary back home in their chosen profession, the new tier 1 system will be more than suitable as a replacement for the old Hsmp scheme.
